GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's lacrosse team snapped its five-game losing streak with a victory over the Grizzlies of Franklin College on Tuesday afternoon in its first game of the season at Zuidema Field. Eight Knights contributed goals as Calvin defeated its visitors decisively by a score of 20-1.

Senior Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) got the Knights off to an early lead with back-to-back unassisted goals in the first 2:18 of play. Less than two minutes later, sophomore Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills) widened the lead to three goals, scoring off a feed by Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian). Junior Emma Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite Senior School) added a fourth goal before the Grizzlies called timeout less than five minutes in to break up the momentum. Madeline Baas (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) earned the assist on Hall's goal.

With 19:50 left in the first half, Tilma fed Pepper once again for the Knights' fifth goal. After over 10 minutes of scoreless play, Cefaratti netted another goal to complete her hat trick.

Two minutes later, freshman Allyson Mesman (Jenison, Mich./Hudsonville) scored an unassisted goal. Junior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) followed, putting in a free position goal. Thirty-six second later, Cefaratti recorded her fourth goal, also off a free position attempt. Freshman Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian) capped off Calvin's first-half scoring, capitalizing on a one-timer off a feed by Cefaratti.

Franklin's lone goal came late in the first half, when Cali Wetli scored on a man-up opportunity.

Calvin headed into halftime with a commanding 10-lead, including a 22-2 shots advantage.

The Knights came out strong after the break, quickly regaining their double-digit lead as Davio, freshman Jamie Van De Burg (Lowell, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), Verrett and Pepper scored in the first five minutes of the half.

With 23:14 remaining, Pepper assisted Davio for her third goal of the afternoon, bringing the score to 15-1. After a Franklin goalie change, the Knights struck again quickly as Hall assisted Cefaratti for her fifth goal.

As the midpoint of the second half passed, Davio posted her fourth goal of the afternoon and sophomore Grace Einfeld (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) followed, scoring off a pass from Cefaratti to give Calvin a 18-1 advantage.

Davio matched Cefaratti's five goals, scoring off a pass by Tilma. With 2:37 remaining, Pepper netted the final goal of the game, her fourth, scoring unassisted off her own rebound after her first shot attempt hit the post.

In the victory, Calvin held a 42-5 shots advantage. The Knights completed 8-9 clearing attempts, while the Grizzlies completed 9-18.

The Knights won 18-23 draw controls, including 11 draw control wins by Baas.
