GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.– The Calvin women's basketball team will host Albion College on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. for a conference matchup.
The Teams: The Brits are 15-4 overall on the season and 7-3 in the MIAA. The Knights bring a 9-11 overall record and 4-7 MIAA record into the competition.
The Coaches: Doreen Carden is in her 18th year as head women's basketball coach at Albion College. Carden is the most successful coach in the history of the Albion College women's basketball program leading the Brits to winning seasons 13 out of 17 years. Carden's 17-year record at Albion is 271-177, a winning percentage of .605. As a player, Carden enjoyed success throughout her career. She helped Sterling Heights Stevenson reach the state quarterfinal in 1987 and the state semifinals in 1989. Carden earned Most Valuable Player honors in the Macomb Athletic Conference in 1988 and 1989.
Austin Randel is in his first year as interim head coach for the Calvin women's basketball program. Randel graduated from Ferris State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business in May of 2010. He started his college basketball career at NCAA Division II North Greenville University in Greenville, SC before transferring to Ferris State. For the past 5 years, Head Coach of Michigan Basketball Academy High School AAU Teams, as well as being named Master Skills Trainer for Youth Camps.
The Players: For the Brits, Rain Hinton leads the team with a 74.0 free throw average, a 7.2 rebound average and a 14.6 scoring average.
For the Knights, Gabby Timmer leads the team with a 9.9 rebound average, 32 blocks, a 17.5 scoring average and a 51.7 field goal average.
