KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The women's basketball team improved to 16-2 on the year and 7-2 in the MIAA with a win at Kalamazoo. The Knights downed the Hornets on Saturday, 81-50. Calvin has now won five-straight games.
The Knights started off hot on Saturday, outscoring the Hornets 25-6 in the first quarter. Senior Anna Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian) and sophomore Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) did not miss a basket in the first quarter.
Calvin would go into halftime with a 44-17 lead after the Knights outscored the Hornets in the second quarter, 19-11. Junior Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Ohio/Worthington Christian) led all players with 10 points in the second quarter.
The Maroon and Gold would cruise in the second half and score 37 points to Kalamazoo's 33.
Ali Spayde led all players with 21 points. Spayde drained five three-point baskets to move into fifth place on the Calvin career three-point basket list at 139. She also had a season-high seven assists.
Anna Timmer recorded her 12th double-double of the year with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Junior Sarah Cassel (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) also recorded 10 points on Saturday.
The Knights scored 23 points off of 18 Kalamazoo turnovers.
Calvin tallied 43 rebounds on Saturday and held the Hornets to 32 rebounds.
The Maroon and Gold return to action on Wednesday when the Knights host Alma.
