Calvin Women's Basketball Downs Grove City 57-40 at Puerto Rico Classico

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO - Calvin closed out its two-game slate at the Puerto Rico Clasico with a 57-40 victory over Grove City College Thursday morning.

The Knights head into Christmas break with an 11-1 record and riding a five-game win streak.

Calvin jumped out to a 15-8 first quarter lead and led 35-25 at halftime.

The Knights used a 7-0 run to open the second half to build a 42-25 lead and never looked back from that point on.

Senior Anna Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) had an efficient game, scoring 20 points on 9 of 11 shooting while grabbing five rebounds.

Senior Lauren Goldthorpe (St. Ignace, Mich./LaSalle HS) had 16 points and was 4 of 7 from three-point range. During her two games at the tournament, Goldthorpe connected on 9 of 16 from three-point range.

Junior Bre Luurtsema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) had 10 points and five boards while junior guard Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Oh./Worthington Christian HS) had nine points and five assists.

Calvin shot 47.1 percent from the field while limiting Grove City to 31.8 percent field goal shooting. The Knights also outrebounded the Wolverines (5-5) 32-31.

Lexie Arkwright led Grove City with 16 points while Laura Buchanan had 10.

With her 20 points on Thursday, Timmer boosted her career total to 1,071 points, moving past Breanna Verkaik and into 13th place on the Calvin career scoring list.

Calvin returns to action on January 4 when it travels to Trine for a 6 p.m. MIAA contest.
