Calvin Softball Sweeps Belles in Saturday Conference Contest

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's softball team took both end of a conference doubleheader with Saint Mary's Saturday afternoon.

Calvin 2, Saint Mary's 1

The Knights came out strong in the bottom of the first inning as junior Abi Colon (Caledonia, Mich. / South Christian) reached base on an error and junior Hannah Horvath (Caledonia, Mich. / Caledonia/ Lansing CC) scored from second base. Next, junior Grace Quiggle (Saranac, Mich. / Lowell, Lansing CC) belted a sacrifice fly out to center field to bring in freshman Hannah Biddlecome (Portage, Mich. / Portage Northern) from third to give Calvin the early 2-0 lead.

The teams then traded shutout innings over the next five frames.

The Belles recorded one run in the top of the seventh, using back-to-back two-out doubles but sophomore Ellie Borst (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) closed the door with a game-ending strikeout. Borst came up clutch as well in the third inning, striking out a runner on an 11-pitch at-bat with the bases loaded and two outs.

Borst picked up her ninth win in the circle as she struck out five and only walked one.

Calvin 7, Saint Mary's 2

The Knights once again came out strong in the top of the first inning scoring six runs to take a huge early lead.

Senior Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich. / Unity Christian) reached base on a fielder's choice and Horvath scored. Mallory Hoatlin (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Kenowa Hills) then fired a double down the left field line to bring in DeGroot and Biddlecome as Calvin took the 3-0 edge.

Junior Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Ill. / Lincoln Way East) followed by blasting a two-run homer as Calvin went up 5-0.

Finishing out the inning with one more run, Horvath singled to right field and Borden scored.

Saint Mary's scored two runs in the bottom of the first but did not score again..

In the top of the fifth, DeGroot single to shortstop and Biddlecome ran home to provide an important insurance run.

Colon made her first pitching debut of the season and recorded a win at the mound as she struck out four and only walked one. Colon was part of an unusual no-hitter as senior Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Ia./Valley HS), Colon and Borst all combined on the no-hitter with the Belles reaching base on four walks but not collecting a hit in the game.

Calvin collected 12 hits in the win with Horvath, Groen, Borden and senior Kristen Newman (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS) all collecting two hits apiece.

COACHES QUOTE: Becky Hilgert stated, "Two great team wins today. We have a few players out sick and the whole team from the starters to our role players stepped up in the face of adversity and all elevated their games. The conditions were tough with the wind, but we kept grinding offensively and scoring first in both games really set the tone and gave us some confidence. In game two, Abi Colon came in early and really showed her bulldog mentality on the mound. Our defense made some big plays in both games and Maddie DeGroot had another great game at third. Our pitching staff all contributed today, even those who didn't play, as they were ready to go if their number was called. Overall, it was a fun day at the field.

UP NEXT: The Knights return to action on Monday as they host Manchester for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
