GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin softball team split with Cleary on Monday afternoon to move to 12-12 on the season. The Knights rallied to win game one 7-6 and fell in a storm-shortened second game 8-3.
"I'm happy with how hard we played today," said head coach Becky Hilgert. "We didn't give up and fought to the end. We were aggressive at the plate which was good to see. We still have work to do and some things to tighten up but it was good to get a win today."
The Knights struck first in game one with three runs in the third inning. Freshman Katie Mumby (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) started the scoring with a homerun over the leftfield fence. Junior Kaley Frank (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) doubled to left field to score sophomore Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian). Frank slid into home plate on a well-executed bunt from junior Jessica Brasser (Rockford, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian).
The Cougars would tie the game with three runs in the top of the fourth inning.
As the rain began to fall heavily, Cleary added three more runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 6-3 lead. The Knights would not back down however, with the bases loaded, sophomore Rachel Borden (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) singled up the middle to score sophomore Kristen Newman (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) and freshman Maddie Ellinger (Troy, Mich./Athens). With two outs, sophomore Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) single through the right side of the infield to score Borden from second. Jessica Brasser shot the ball at the shortstop who had trouble fielding the ball and Kaley Frank crossed the plate to seal the victory for Calvin.
Anna Gernant improved to 10-5 in the circle and finished with 12 strikeouts.
The Cougars jumped out to an early 6-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the second inning tin game two.
Freshman Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) got the Knights on the scoreboard in the bottom with a triple to left field that scored Anna Gernant. Groen scored off a fielder's choice and Maddie DeGroot singled in Kristen Newman.
Cleary added a run in the fifth and sixth inning to take an 8-3 lead.
As freshman Jordan VanEerden (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) sent a shot into the outfield in the bottom of the seventh inning, a lightning bolt flashed across the sky and the game was called final after six innings.
Senior Paige Groom (Potterville, Mich./Potterville) recorded two strikeouts in game two.
