Men's Cross Country Places Third at UW-Oshkosh Invitational

LAKE WINNECONNE, Wisc. - The 17th-ranked Calvin men's cross country team had a stellar performance at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational Saturday morning at the Lake Breeze Golf Club. Competing in a field of nationally-ranked teams, the Knights took third with a team score of 109 points.

Second-ranked North Central took first with 24 points while fourth-ranked UW-Eau Claire was second with 73 points. Calvin finished ahead of 15th-ranked Washington University of St. Louis (fourth place -141 points), 28th-ranked Ohio Northern (fifth place-197 points) and 26th-ranked Augustana (IL) which placed sixth with 231 points.

Senior Zac Nowicki (Comstock Park, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) had a big day, finishing ninth in a time of 25:13. Nowicki ran as high as third place individually during the race before settling in for a top-10th finish. Senior Jordan Kramer (Pewaukee, Wisc./Lake Country Lutheran HS) also had a terrific performance, placing 16th in a time of 25:26. Also cracking the top 25 was junior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) in 24th with a time of 25:39.

Junior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./Mount Prospect HS) also had a good afternoon, placing 32nd in a time of 25:46.

Sophomore Jamison Koeman (Milford, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) was 55th in 26:04, sophomore Nathanael Dick (Grand Rapids, Mich./Home Schooled) 74th in 26:13 and freshman Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) was 78th in 26:17.

Other Calvin finishers included senior Nathan VanHaitsma (Olympia, Wash./Olympia HS) in 82nd (26:19), freshman Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) in 118th (26:38), junior Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) in 120th (26:39), freshman Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul Foreign School) in 154th (26:53), senior Matt Plantinga (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) in 165th (27:02) and junior Matt Boelens (Nashoba, Mass./Nashoba Regional HS) in 205th (27:18).

"We had a real nice day. Our team is progressing nicely," said Calvin head cross country coach Brian Diemer. "Zac Nowicki ran a nice mature race. He started out in the top 10 and ran very confident and easy. He was very patient and is maturing."

ON JORDAN KRAMER: "It was really good to have Jordan Kramer back. He was very solid. He fills a very needed gap for us. He is steady as the day is long."

ON MARK DEJONG: - Mark DeJong had a good solid race. He gave us strength up front."

ON ANDREW PHILIPOSE – "Andrew did very well today. We had to back him off a bit but He is a gamer."

ON JAMISON KOEMAN – "Jamison came from way back. We have been talking to him about going out with a bit more confidence. He ran a passing race today and still has a higher gear he can reach."

ON NATHANAEL DICK – "Nathanael is a hard competitor and worker. He is an essential part of our team."

ON TYLER JOHNSON – "Tyler is coming around which is exciting to see. He is filling a spot. His performance is good for the future of our program."

ON PREPARING FOR THE MIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN TWO WEEKS: "This is where we start sharpening. Today we had to find out what kind of a team we have. Do we have tenacity? Do we fight for each other? We found out that we have those qualities. Now we can start sharpening, start honing in. This is when the fun really starts."

Calvin returns to action on October 29 when it competes at the MIAA Championships hosted by Albion College.
