Calvin Men's Cross Country Captures Calvin Knight Invite Title

The 21st-ranked Calvin men's cross country team rolled to a first place finish at its own Calvin Knight Invite on Saturday, posting a team score of 21 points. The Knights took four of the top five spots and placed six runners in the top 13 to run away with the win.

Senior Zac Nowicki (Comstock Park, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) was the top individual collegiate finisher with a time of 25:31. Senior Jordan Kramer (Pewaukee, Wisc./Lake Country Lutheran HS) was next for Calvin in a third place time of 25:46. Sophomore Jamison Koeman (Milford, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) was fifth in 25:57 and junior Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) sixth in 25:59.

Senior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was Calvin's fifth man, placing 12th in 26:12 while junior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./Mount Prospect HS) took 13th (26:14).

Also placing in the top 20 for Calvin were sophomore Nathanael Dick (Grand Rapids, Mich./Home Schooled) in 16th (26:21), senior Robbie Hohlman (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) in 17th (26:27) and freshman Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) in 20th (26:35).

Temperatures were moderate Saturday morning leading to a fast course according to Calvin head cross country coach Brian Diemer. "It was a beautiful day at the Calvin cross country course," said Diemer. "It was crisp and cool just like a fall morning and we showed that we are ready to start dreaming. Today there were certain things that we needed to accomplish. The thing I noticed is that we were more about just individual running. We were a team."

Calvin will now break for two weeks and will prepare its varsity group for a trip to the state of Washington where the Knights will compete at the University of Washington Sundodger Invitational on September 17. Meanwhile another group from Calvin's cross country team will compete at the Spartan Invitational that same day.
