Calvin Men's Track and Field Has Stellar Set of Performances at Ferris State Bulldog Invitational

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's track and field team competed at the Ferris State Bulldog Invitational.

The Knights put together several notable performances.

Calvin had two event champions. Junior Noah Buteyn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) won the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 56.93 while sophomore Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian HS) won the long jump (22-1).

Senior Reitsma Mpindi (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was second in the long jump (21-9 3/4) and third in the 100 meter dash (11.45).

Buteyn was part of three Knights to finish in the top eight in the 400 meter hurdles as freshman Sam Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) was fourth (57.73) and junior Chase Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington HS) seventh (1:00.07). In the 110 meter high hurdles, sophomore Alex Williams (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead HS) was third (16.00) and Rohrer fourth (16.19).

Rohrer led off Calvin's 4x100 meter relay that placed third in a time of 46.15. Rohrer was joined in the relay by Barents, junior Jeremiah Stout (Escondido, Ca./Escondido Calvin Christian HS) and freshman Christopher Visser (Fremont, Mich./Western Michigan Christian HS).

In the pole vault, Calvin went 2-4-6 as junior Jacob Stout (Escondido, Ca./Escondido Calvin Christian HS) was second (13-5 1/4), freshman Jonathan Walt (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) fourth (12-11 1/2) and junior Devin Schweigert (Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall HS) sixth (12-5 1/2).

Senior Jeiel Burrell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was third in the high jump (6-2 3/4) while sophomore Brendan VanHouten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was seventh in the discus (146-5). Senior Erick Holder (Marian, Ind./Eastbrook HS) snagged a third place showing in the javelin (154-2) while freshman Jordan Jorritsma (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was eighth (145-2).

In the 200 meters, junior Ethan Valentine (Mason, Oh./William Mason HS) was third (22.79) while sophomore James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) was fourth (51.21). Sophomore Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) also had a sterling effort in the 800 meters, placing second in a time of 1:59.13.

Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of senior Nathan Anderson (Milan, Mich./Milan HS), sophomore Josh VanDyk (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS), junior Hendrik VerMeulen (Bright's Grove, Ont./St. Patrick's Secondary School) and Peterson placed third in a time of 3:28.82.

The distance events were a huge highlight for Calvin. In the 1,500 meters, Calvin took five of the top eight spots led by senior Jordan Kramer (Pewaukee, Wisc./Lake Country Lutheran HS) who took third in a time of 3:55.49 that currently ranks 13th nationally. Junior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was close behind in fourth (3:56.73) while senior Nathan Van Haitsma (Olympia, Wash./Olympia HS) was fifth (3:58.86) and freshman Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) sixth (3:59.96). Junior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./John Hersey HS) was eighth in 4:00.67. DeJong's time currenlty ranks 24th nationally.

In the 3,000 meters, sophomore Jonathan Randall (Hopkington, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) was seventh (9:25.11).

The Knights then took four of the top five spots in the 5,000 meters led by freshman Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) who took second (15:19.60). Senior Robbie Hohlman (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) was third (15:31.16), freshman Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul Foreign School) fourth (15:39.86) and senior Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) fifth (15:52.79).

Calvin returns to action on Thursday, competing at the Siena Heights Invitational.
