Calvin Men's Tennis Clips Comets in MIAA Dual Match

Calvin improved to 13-4 overall and to 3-1 in the MIAA with a 9-0 conference victory over visiting Olivet Tuesday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.

Senior Taylor Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Matt VanWinkle (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph HS) were 8-0 winners at No. 1 doubles. Senior Anthony Vroon (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian HS) and sophomore Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) were 8-0 winners at No. 2 doubles while senior Jason Doezema (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Kyrus Tsai (Glenbrook, Il./Glenbrook South HS) were 8-0 winners at No. 3 doubles.

In singles action, freshman Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzman (Tarija, Bolivia/Felipe Palazon) was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 1 singles, running his season singles record to 9-5. VanWinkle won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to up his season singles mark to 8-4.

Wolters claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles and is now 9-7 in singles play this spring. Doezema powered his way to a 6-0, 6-1 win ast No. 4 singles and is now 7-3 in singles action this year.

Freshman Cobe Benzel (San Dimas, Ca./San Dimas HS) got the start at the No. 5 singles slot and responded with a 6-0, 6-0 win. Benzel is now 4-1 in singles action this spring.

Sophomore Charlie Fahr (Milwaukee, Wisc./Toas East HS) claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles and is now 6-2 in singles play this year.

Calvin will now prepare to travel to nationally-ranked Kalamazoo on Saturday for a 1 p.m. conference match.
