Calvin Men's Tennis Claims MIAA Road Win at Trine

ANGOLA, Ind. - The Calvin men's tennis team got back on the winning track with a hard-fought 5-4 conference victory at Trine University Saturday afternoon.

The Knights improve to 11-4 overall and to 2-1 in the MIAA with the win.

Calvin took two of the three doubles points to gain the early edge. Junior David Brown (Lake Zurich, Il./Lake Zurich HS) and freshman Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzman (Tarija, Bolivia/Felipe Palazon HS) claimed an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Senior Anthony Vroon (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian HS) and sophomore Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) then pulled out a key 9-8 win at No. 3 doubles.

Vaca Guzman recorded a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. Junior MattWinkle (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph HS) was a 6-4, 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles. Wolters helped clinch the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles.

Trine picked up three-set tiebreaker wins at both No. 3 and No. 5 singles to close the final deficit.

"It was not our prettiest performance but Trine has a good team and it is always difficult to win on the road," said Calvin men's tennis coach John Ross. "We did enough to get the win but we need to continue to improve."

Vaca Guzman is now 8-4 in singles play this year including 3-0 against MIAA opponents. Vroon and Wolters are 11-1 in doubles play this season.

Calvin will host Bethel College of Indiana in a non-conference match Monday at 3:30 p.m.
