Calvin Men's Tennis Rolls to 9-0 Win Over Concordia-Chicago

CHICAGO, IL - The Calvin men's tennis team improved to 4-0 on the 2017 season with a 9-0 win at Concordia University of Chicago Thursday afternoon.

The Knights rolled through double competition in quick fashion, winning all three flights by 8-0 scores. Freshman Rodrigo Castellano Vaca Guzman (Tarja, Bolivia/Felipe Palazon HS) and senior Taylor Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) won 8-0 at No. 1 doubles.

Seniors Anthony Vroon (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian HS) and Jared Doezema (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) won 8-0 at No. 2 doubles and freshmen Cobe Benzel (San Dimas, Ca./San Dimas HS) and Kyrus Tsai (Glenbrook, Il./Glennbrook South HS) won 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

Vaca Guzman then won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles while Asfour was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles. Vroon won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Doezema 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Benzel won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Tsai 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles to close out the match.

Thursday's match is the first of a three-match weekend slate for the Knights as they travel to Ripon (Wisc.) on Friday for a 6:15 p.m. match and to Lakeland (Wisc.) on Saturday for a 10 a.m. contest.

"It was a good start to our weekend," said Calvin men's tennis coach John Ross. "I thought we were focused and played hard. We will need to bring that same focus and intensity in our next two matches."
