Men’s Tennis Starts 2017 Downing Augustana and Concordia

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The men's tennis team picked up a pair of victories on Saturday at the Huizenga Tennis & Track Center. The Knights started the day with an 8-1 victory over Augustana and swept Concordia 9-0 to close the day. Calvin is now 2-0 on the year, Augustana defeated Concordia 9-0 to improve to 2-3 and Concordia falls to 1-5 on the season.

"I am really happy with how we played today," said head coach John Ross. "I thought that we looked sharp in singles and did very well in doubles. It was nice to be able to start the season at home and get a lot of guys into the lineup today."

The Knights started the day sweeping the doubles competition against the Vikings. Senior Taylor Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and junior Matt VanWinkle (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) defeated Eric Pohl and Jack Morkin at No. 1 doubles, 8-6. At No. 2 doubles, freshman Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzmán (Tarija, Bolivia/Felipe Palazon) and junior David Brown (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) downed Scott Daluga and Nicholas Prabhakar, 8-0. Sophomore Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) and freshman Owen Brookhouse (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian) beat Alex Riddle and David Gunther Treis at No. 3 doubles, 8-3.

David Brown started singles play with a victory over Scott Daluga at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0.

Senior Anthony Vroon (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian) picked up a victory at No. 3 singles against Micholas Prabhaker, 6-4, 6-1.

At No. 2 singles, Taylor Asfour downed Jack Morkin, 6-4, 6-1.

Matt VanWinkle edged David Gunther Treis at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 7-5.

Jason Wolters closed the match against Augustana with a victory at No. 6 singles against Alex Riddle, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.

The Knights made quick work of the Cardinals in doubles play on Saturday. David Brown and Taylor Asfour swept the Cardinals at No. 1 doubles, 8-0. Senior Jared Doezema (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and freshman Kyrus Tsai (Glenbrook, Ill./Glenbrook South) were victorious at No. 3 doubles against Jacob Baxter and Joel Werner, 8-2. Anthony Vroon and Jason Wolters closed doubles play with an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles.

Owen Brookhouse downed Jacob Baxter at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1.

David Brown bounced Alexander Koziel at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-2.

At No. 4 singles, Jared Doezema beat Ryan Curtis, 6-0, 6-2.

Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzmán dropped Gustavo Lozada at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1.

Sophomore Charlie Fahr (Milwaukee, Wis./Toas East) earned the victory at No. 5 singles over Alexander Jassen, 6-0, 6-1.

Freshman Cobe Benzel (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas) swept Joel Werner at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

Calvin returns to action on Feb. 25 at Lake Forest.
