ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Calvin swimming & diving teams competed in the fun filled Water Carnival on the campus of the University of Michigan. The Knights swam against a pair of NCAA Division I schools, including Oakland.
"It was a great way to start the season," said Calvin head coach Dan Gelderloos." I saw a lot of smiles all day long and it really gave great perspective on having fun. We really had a great time. Michigan was a fantastic host."
In the 2x200-yard medley relay, the Knights took seventh place. The team of freshman Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington), junior Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), junior Elysa Wolf (Austin, Texas/ Regents School of Austin) and junior Jacob Lensing (Pella, Iowa/Pella Christian) clocked in a time of 3:32.53.
Junior Nathan Olberding (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) was the fastest Knight in the mixed 300-yard butterfly with fins at 3:03.13.
In 14th place in the mixed 50-yard freestyle with fins underwater was Lucas Holcombe at 21.05.
The team of freshman Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela / Colegio Emil Friedman), senior Tanner Vincent (Novi, Mich./Novi), senior Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) placed sixth in the mixed 500-yard freestyle variable distance relay at 4:21.88.
Sophomore Fear Churchwell (Athens, Ga./Clarke Central) was the fastest Knights in the 100-yard IM at 57.47.
The Knights took ninth place in the mixed 200-yard freestyle relay with fins. The team of Nathan Olberding, sophomore Luke Herman (Waterford, Wis./Burlington), sophomore Sam Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant) and senior John Kutschke (Manistee, Mich./Manistee) touched the wall at 1:23.17.
Julian Iturbe was in eighth place in the mixed 300-yard IM at 3:16.42.
In the mixed 25-yard knockout, senior Abby VanHarn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) finished in fourth place.
On the men's side, junior Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) placed fifth.
The Knights closed the day with a fifth place finish in the mixed 400-yard freestyle. The team of freshman Robyn Ellens (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian), Tanner Vincent, sophomore Libby Engle (Troy, Mich./Troy) and Ryan Gelderloos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) finished at 3:17.57.
The Knights return to action on October 20 against Grand Valley.
