Calvin Men's Swimming and Diving Takes Second at Calvin Quad

The Calvin men's swimming and diving team took second at its own Calvin Quad that included 21st-ranked Albion, 24th-ranked Carthage and Ohio Northern. Carthage took the weekend crown with 982 points while Calvin was second with 931, Albion thirdwith 775 points and Ohio Northern fourth with 750.

The brother tandem of sophomore Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS) and senior Eli Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS) had a big set of performances on Saturday leading off with the 200 medley relay as the quartet took first place in a time of 1:35.53. Ben Holstege led off the relay in the backstroke leg followed by brother Eli in the breaststroke portion. Senior Brett Stoughton (Centerville, Ind./Centerville HS) followed with the butterfly and sophomore Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason HS) concluded with the freestyle leg.

Ben Holstege led a one-two Calvin finish in the 100 backstroke, winning with a time of 52.38 while junior Skyler Fish (Ionia, Mich./Ionia HS) was second (52.79).

Fish captured first place in the 200 backstroke (1:56.91) while junior Steven Tarske (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) was seventh (2:07.40).

Ben Holstege continued his first place push by winning the 100 freestyle in 47.63 while freshman teammate Tim Randall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was seventh (49.02). Randall was also fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:48.69).

In the 100 breaststroke, Eli Holstege was second (59.87) with sophomore Jacob Lensing (Pella, Ia./Pella Christian HS) sixth (1:01.87) and freshman Sam Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS) eighth (1:02.43).

In the 400 IM, freshman Fear Churchwell (Athens, Ga./Clarke Central HS) was third (4:18.85) and then finished third in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.19) while Sam Holstege was seventh in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.30).

Stoughton took a first place medal in his signature event - the 200 butterfly - as he churned to a win with a time of 1:59.22. Sophomore Nate Olberding (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville HS) was fifth (2:04.33) and Tarske eighth (2:07.72).

In the 100 fly, Stoughton was second (52.52), Britton fifth (54.43) and Olberding sixth (54.86).

Calvin's 800 freestyle relay of Olberding, Stoughton, Fish and Randall took second in a time of 7:14.25. The time is currently ranked fifth nationally.

Calvin received points in the 1,650 freestyle as well with freshman Brian Goins (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) taking fifh (17:49.72) and freshman Ian Hazlett (Lutz, Fl./Home Schooled) taking eighth (18:14.82).

In the three-meter diving competition, junior Michael Moentmann (Solon, Oh./Solon HS) took first (490.40), senior Dirk Tanis (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) placing third (406.55) and junior Brian Bolton (Muskegon Heights, Mich./East Kentwood HS) placing seventh (325.45).

Calvin's 400 freestyle relay Ben Holstege, Fish, Olberding and Britton capped off the meet by placing second with a time of 3:10.83 that currently ranks ninth on the NCAA III performance list.

Calvin is back in action next Saturday when it competes at regionally-ranked Wheaton in a non-conference dual meet.
