Calvin Men's Soccer Players Receive Google Cloud Academic All-America Honors

2018 DIVISION III GOOGLE CLOUD MEN'S SOCCER ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS

Three members of the Calvin men's soccer team have received Google Cloud Division III Academic All-America honors.

Senior Jacob Witte and junior Ian Adams have been named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America first team while senior Trent Vegter has been named to the second team.

It marks the first time that the Calvin men's soccer team has produced three Google Cloud Academic All-Americans in one year. It marks the sixth time in school history that one (Calvin) team has had three Academic All-Americans and also marks the first time it has happened since 2005.

A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Witte is receiving Google Cloud Academic All-America honors for the second straight year. He was also a first team selection last year.

Witte is a speech pathology major at Calvin. He is on track to earn his bachelor's and master's degree in Calvin's speech pathology program. Witte has been a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and a six-time member of the Calvin Dean's List.

A winger in Calvin's offensive attack, Witte scored 17 goals and notched eight assists this season for a total of 42 points. He had three goals in NCAA III Tournament play and led the Knights in game-winning goals with five. A member of the All-MIAA first team and United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region third team this fall, Witte had 41 goals, 29 assists and 111 points in his Calvin career. He is ranked sixth on the Calvin career list in goals (41), eighth in assists (29) and seventh in points (111).

Adams is also from Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. A forward, Adams is majoring in computer science and mathematics. He is a two-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and a four-time member of the Calvin Dean's List.

A forward, Adams tallied six goals and 18 assists this year for a total of 30 points. His total of 18 assists is a new Calvin single-season record. He picked up a pair of assists in Calvin's 4-1 national semifinal win over Chicago on Saturday while also scoring one goal which proved to be the game-winner. He was later named to the NCAA III Finals All-Tournament team. Adams was a member of the All-MIAA second team this fall. Adams is receiving Google Cloud Academic All-America honors for the first time.

Vegter is from Hudsonville. He is a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School. Vegter is a civil engineering major at Calvin. He was a member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll during the 2017-18 academic year and received Calvin Dean's List honors.

On the pitch, Vegter has been a four-year starter at centerback. He was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player for the second straight year and received United Soccer Coaches All-America honors for the third straight year, landing a spot on the All-America first team. He tallied three goals, six assists and 12 points this year. He was named to the NCAA III Finals All-Tournament Team. He finished his career with 11 goals, 28 assists and 50 points.

He is receiving Google Cloud Academic All-America honors for the first time. He joins older brother Travis Vegter as a Google Cloud Academic All-American with the Calvin men's soccer program. Travis was a Google Cloud Academic All-American for the Knights in 2013 and 2014.

Calvin finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 22-2-0. The Knights won MIAA regular season and MIAA Tournament titles before advancing all the way to the NCAA III Tournament finals last weekend in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Calvin student-athletes have now received Google Cloud Academic All-America honors 131 times.
