Calvin Men's Soccer Team Claims 2-0 Shutout Win at Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Using a pair of late second half goals, the nationally-ranked Calvin men's soccer team secured a key 2-0 conference victory at Kalamazoo Saturday afternoon.

Senior Isky Van Doorne (Calgary, AB/Western Canada HS) put Calvin up 1-0 on goal in the 81st minute, converting a feed from sophomore Stephan Hooker (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS). Sophomore Bobby McCaw (Dubuque, IA/Hempstead HS) added a goal in the closing minute of play of a pass from junior Mitch Stark (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon HS) to seal the win.

The victory keeps the Knights (12-2-0 overall, 9-1-0 MIAA) six points ahead of Adrian in the MIAA standings.

"It was a great win for our team today," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "There are no easy games on the road in our league, especially at Kalamazoo. I am really proud of the second half our guys played. We will enjoy this win but not for long because we have another difficult road test next week that we have to ready for."

Calvin outshot Kalamazoo 5-2 in the opening half with both teams sharing the possession. "I thought the first half was fairly even," said Souders. "We started gaining more of the ball in the second half and our ball movement started creating scoring chances which was big."
Calvin outshot the Hornets 8-3 in the second half and finally cashed in when Van Doorne took a lead pass from Hooker at the top of the box and slipped a shot inside the near post to give the Knights a 1-0 lead with 9:52 remaining.

With the Knights possessing the ball and seeking to run out the clock, Stark was able to beat a Kalamazoo triple-team in the corner and send a pass to McCaw in front of the net for the final score with just one second left to play. The goal was the fifth of the year for McCaw.

Calvin finished with a 13-5 shots at goal advantage. Junior Nate Van Ryn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) had two saves including a key one off a Kalamazoo corner kick with five minutes left in regulation and the Knights holding a 1-0 lead.

The shutout was the eighth of the year for Van Ryn.

Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it travels to Olivet for a 4 p.m. match.
