Calvin Men's Soccer Secures Shutout at Scotland Yard
ALMA, Mich. - The 20th-ranked Calvin men's soccer team secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory at Alma's Scotland Yard Tuesday afternoon.

The victory keeps Calvin on top of the MIAA table with a 5-0-0 league record, three points clear of second place Albion (4-1-0). The two teams will meet in a showdown for first place on Saturday at Calvin's Zuidema Field at 2:30 p.m.

Calvin (8-1-0 overall) struck for a goal in each half against Alma (6-3-1 overall, 2-2-1 MIAA).

Sophomore Jacob Witte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) scored an unassisted goal just 3:38 into the match. The Knights threated to score several times after that but could not add to their total until the 56th minute when sophomore Trent Vegter (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) was able to score off a feed from senior Isky VanDoorne (Calgary, AB/Western Canada HS).

Junior Nate Van Ryn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) collected three saves in goal for Calvin to record his fifth shutout victory of the season.

Calvin finished with an 18-7 shots at goal advantage. Nick Strait had eight saves in goal for the Scots.

"It was good to get a road win in the conference," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Alma is a very well-coached team and they were prepared. We've got to work these next few days and get read for a big matchup on Saturday."

Calvin is scheduled to host Albion on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
