Calvin Men's Soccer Claims Cal Bergsma Tournament Title With 5-1 Win Over Aurora

The Calvin men's soccer team claimed the title of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament on Saturday, defeating Aurora University 5-1.

After falling behind 1-0 in the opening moments of the game, Calvin (3-1-0) came back to level the score 1-1 on a goal by freshman Ian Adams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) with just over two minutes left in the first half. The goal by Adams was set up by a well-placed chip by sophomore Trent Vegter (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS).

The goal proved to be an energizer for the Knights according to head coach Ryan Souders. "That goal was huge," said Souders. "Goals change games. That goal was encouraging and it allowed us to play more freely in the second half."

The Knights then exploded for four second half goals with junior Mitch Stark (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon HS) assisting on three of the four.

Sophomore Jacob Witte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) put the Knights ahead 2-1 on a goal in the 51st minute. Calvin then padded its lead on goals by sophomore Bobby McCaw (Dubuque, Ia./Hempstead HS), Adams and senior Isky VanDoorne (Calgary, AB/Western Canada HS). Witte and junior Matt Hinds (Frankenmuth, Mich./Frankenmuth HS) also were credited with assists on the afternoon.

Calvin finished with a 31-6 shots at goal advantage. Junior Nate VanRyn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) and sophomore Luke Schepers (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) combined in goal for the Knights to post the win.

"I was really proud of the way we played in the second half," said Souders. "Our guys came out committed to the way we wanted to play, moved the ball around and finally got on the end of some chances and put the ball in the back of the net."

In Saturday's other second round tournament game, Hope defeated Aurora 2-1 in overtime. Calvin was the only team to finish the tournament with a 2-0-0 record. Aurora and Hope finished 1-1-0 while Benedictine finished 0-2-0.

The Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament title is Calvin's first outright crown since 2009 and its sixth overall. The tournament began in 2001 and is dedicated to Calvin alumnus Dr. Calvin Bergsma who died tragically in a car accident during the summer of 2001.

A 1967 graduate of Calvin College, Dr. Bergsma was a West Michigan urologist who was known as a kind-hearted man who cared deeply for everyone. Dr. Bergsma was particularly close to his friends at both Calvin College and Hope College. He had family ties to both institutions as his wife Gwen (1968) and son Corwyn (1996) are Calvin graduates while his son Clayton is a graduate (2000) of Hope College. Clayton was a four-year member of the Hope men's soccer team while Corwyn was a four-year member of the Calvin men's basketball program. Dr. Bergsma was a man who also loved athletics and this tournament - now in its 16th year of existence – gives honor to his name and family.

Calvin will now prepare to open its MIAA schedule on Tuesday when it hosts Adrian at 4 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
