DELAWARE, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops came out on top against the Knights on Saturday night, walking away 2-1 winners. The lose snaps a 36 regular-season match unbeaten streak for Calvin that had stood since Sept. 5, 2014, when the Knights lost at Wheaton.
"Tough loss against a really good side," said head coach Ryan Souders. "We have been able to know them quite well over the past few years and we have a ton of respect for OWU. We have to learn from this. I'm not sure we gave the greatest account of ourselves tonight, but I'm hopeful that we can pick up some things and keep moving forward."
Both teams had their chances in the first half, but neither were able to capitalize. Heading into halftime, the Knights outshot the Battling Bishops, 5-3.
The Battling Bishops struck first in the 68th minute off of a header from Luke Bean.
Ohio Wesleyan struck again in the 82nd minute on a penalty kick caused by a handball in the box.
Senior Isky Van Doorne (Calgary, Alberta/Western Alberta) had a well-placed ball into the upper corner in the final few minutes but the OWU keeper was able to come up with the key save.
Freshman Ben Mast (Grand Haven, Mich./Spring Lake) was able to get Calvin on the scoreboard with three seconds left in the match. The goal was his first at Calvin College. Junior Derek Williams (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) was credited with the assist.
Calvin outshot Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday night, 16-7.
Junior Nate Van Ryn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian) made some big saves on Saturday and tallied four saves on the night.
Junior Matt Hinds (Frankenmuth, Mich./Frankenmuth) and Isky Van Noord both had three shots for Calvin.
The Knights return to action on Friday when they open the home schedule against Benedictine.
