GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's Lacrosse team defeated Northland 22-4 on Saturday afternoon at Zuidema Field.
Calvin struck first as freshman Chase Sparling (Novi, Mich. / Novi High School) connected with senior Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Brother Rice) and he scorched one in the net to start the Knights out strong as they took an early 4-0 lead.
The Lumberjacks scored next to tighten Calvin's lead to within three.
With just under three minutes left in the first quarter, Chase Sparling recorded his second goal of the game and as the quarter closed out Calvin led 5-1.
Chase Sparling on fire, started the second quarter out blasting another goal to record a hat-trick.
The Knights continued to control the game as they went on to score seven more goals and as the half concluded, Calvin led 13-1.
With the third quarter underway, Calvin recorded five more goals to stretch its lead to 18-1.
The two teams exchanged goals in the fourth quarter including two goals from sophomore Noah Boelens (Round Lake, Ill. / Grayslake Central), but it was the Knights who remained on top as they ran away with the 22-4 victory.
Leading the Knights was Chase Sparling and Boelens with four goals each.
Freshman Goalkeeper Evan Griffin (Howell, Mich. / Hartland High School) recorded his first win in the net with 11 saves.
Calvin outshot Northland 48 to 18.
Head Coach Dave Hoger stated, "Today was another great team win. We shared the ball well and finished our opportunites. I'm proud of our guys and excited to move on to conference play next week."
The Knights return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Kalamazoo to take on the Hornets at 7 p.m.
