Calvin Men's Lacrosse Opens Season with Victory Over Wabash

CRAWFORDSVILLE, IN. – The Calvin men's lacrosse team defeated Wabash 8-2 on Saturday afternoon in its first match of the season. 

Both teams came out competitively in the first period as the game remained scoreless. With just over five minutes left in the quarter and the Knights a man down, they struck first as senior Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Brother Rice) found sophomore Nathan Jindra (South Bend, Ind. / John Adams) and he scorched one in the net. 

It didn't take long for Wabash to answer and tie the game up 1-1 as the first period closed out. 

With the second quarter underway, the two teams battled to take the lead. With just under seven minutes in the half, the Knights took a 2-1 advantage as junior Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich. / Novi) found the back of the net. The Knights on fire, sophomore Conner Wysong (Holland, Mich. / Holland Christian) found sophomore Jacob Gandara (Santa Clarita, Calif. / West Ranch)with about five minutes left in the half. Calvin wasn't finished yet as Wysong once again recorded an assist as he found Foster in the final minute of play and the Knights took the 4-1 lead. 

The Knights came out the second half continuing to control the game. With twelve minutes in the quarter left, sophomore Noah Boelens (Round Lake, Ill. / Grayslake Central) gave Calvin the 5-1 edge. As the quarter looked to close out, the Knights added two more goals with just under two minutes left. First, senior Noah Nedd (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) found Foster as he claimed his second goal followed by Sparling as he also recorded his second goal and Calvin led 7-1.

With ten minutes in the fourth quarter, Gandara connected with sophomore Luke VanderKooy (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and he blasted one in the net as Calvin pulled ahead 8-1.

With just over two minutes left in the contest and Wabash up one man, the Little Giants recorded their second goal and as the contest closed out, the Knights ran away with the 8-2 win. 

Calvin outshot Wabash 41 to 29. Sophomore Goalkeeper Gerrit Kurtycz (Hudsonville, Mich. / Hudsonville) had twelve saves in goal. 

Head Coach Dave Hoger stated, "I thought our team played with a lot of energy and effort today. We were able to push through some first game jitters and still come out on top. We had some young guys step up in big ways and our senior leadership was amazing. We're excited to have the first game under our belt now and are ready to get back to work Monday."

The Knights return to action next Saturday as they travel to North Central to take on the Cardinals at 1 p.m.
