Calvin Men's Lacrosse Celebrates Senior Night Against Adrian

The Calvin men's lacrosse team celebrated Senior Night Saturday evening against Adrian College at Grand Rapids Christian High School.

Prior to the game, Calvin honored Calvin seniors Chris Griffin (Hartland, Mich./Hartland HS), Joel Schaefer (Clarksville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian HS) and Jake Hortsman (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) along with team manager Matthew Brown (Kentwood, Mich.).

The Knights fought hard but were defeated by the visiting Adrian Bulldogs 12-10.

The two teams battled evenly through two quarters. Both teams scored three goals in the first quarter and both teams scored three goals in the second quarter as the halftime score was knotted 6-6.

Adrian (3-9 overall, 1-4 MIAA) outscored Calvin 4-1 in the third quarter including a three-goal run in the final 6:57 of the quarter to take a 10-7 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

Calvin played catch-up from that point on as Adrian held on for the road win.

The Knights (4-10 overall, 0-5 MIAA) pulled to within 11-9 on a goal by Chris Griffin with 3:17 remaining. Adrian's Griffin Davison scored a key goal for the Bulldogs with 1:52 however to keep the Knights at bay. Calvin's Chris Griffin added a goal for the Knights on a man-up opportunity with 48 seconds remaining to complete the scoring.

Griffin finished the game with three goals to notch his third hat-trick performance of the season.

Junior Michael Winkler (La Quinta, Ca./Palm Desert HS), freshman Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) and sophomore Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS) all had two goals apiece. Schaefer also scored a goal for the Knights.

Junior Ethan Brown (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth HS) and sophomore Noah Nedd (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had six ground balls apiece.

Freshman Jon Gilbert (Indianapolis, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) received his first collegiate start and collected 12 saves.

Calvin returns to action next Tuesday when it hosts Alma at 4 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
