Calvin Falls to Olivet in MIAA Opener

OLIVET, Mich. - Olivet handed Calvin a 21-6 defeat in the conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.

The host Comets (3-4 overall, 1-0 MIAA) outscored Calvin 10-2 in the first quarter and never looked back.

Calvin (4-6 overall, 0-1 MIAA) scored two goals in the first quarter, one in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth quarter.

Calvin led 1-0 on a goal by Austin Bontreger (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) with 13:50 left in the first quarter but Olivet responded with back-to-back goals.

Sophomore Noah Nedd (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) tied the game for Calvin with a goal with 9:06 remaining. Olivet scored the final eight goals of the first quarter and later led 16-3 at halftime.

Senior Joel Schaefer (Clarksville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian HS) finished the game with two goals for the Knights. Senior Chris Griffin (Hartland, Mich./Howell HS) had a goal and an assist. Sophomore Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS) also had a goal and an assist.

Nedd and Bontreger also both finished with a goal apiece while freshman Andrew Gortsema (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) also finished with an assist.

Junior Ethan Brown (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth HS) had seven ground balls. Freshman goalkeeper Mitchell Caldwell (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing HS) had three saves.

Calvin will host rival Hope Tuesday at 4 p.m. in an MIAA conference game at Zuidema Field.
