HOLLAND, Mich. – The Calvin men's basketball team defeated Mount Saint Joseph 83-62 in the Great Lakes Invitational & Russ DeVette Holiday Classic Tuesday night hosted by Hope College.
Both teams came out competitive as the score remained tight early on in the contest. Tied up at 7-7, Mt. St. Joseph put up a three-pointer and jump shot to take the five-point lead. Calvin battled back as junior Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Covenant Christian) knocked down a three-pointer to tie things up 14-14. Both teams exchanged points, but Calvin then went on a run of eight-points to pull ahead 30-19. The Lions were able to put up some points, but a trio of jump shots by the Knights extended their lead, as they closed out the half with the 36-24 lead.
Using their momentum from the first half, the Knights came out on fire as the second half started. DeVries put up back to back jump shots to extend Calvin's lead 42-28. From there, the Knights took off as they went on a run of 16 points which included a dunk by senior Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich. / Unity Christian) to lead 58-30.
DeVries led the Knights in scoring with 18 points. Senior Jason Walter (Coloma, Mich. / Coloma) put up 13 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Carson Meulenberg (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Covenant Christian) put up 12 points, five rebounds and three assists. Bykerk had 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Knights will take on La Roche tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. in day two of the Great Lakes Invitational.
