WHEATON, Il. - Wheaton pulled away from Calvin for an 86-71 victory Tuesday night inside Wheaton's King Arena.
Calvin (1-3) jumped out to a 14-7 lead and led 29-26 with just over three minutes remaining in the first half. Wheaton closed out the half on a 9-5 run to take a 35-34 halftime lead.
Calvin used an 11-3 run to open the second half to build a 45-38 advantage. A three-point shot gave Wheaton a 50-49 lead with 12:29 remaining. The lead then changed hands four times with Wheaton (4-0) taking the lead for good at 56-54 with 10 minutes remaining.
The Knights trailed just 60-58 with seven minutes remaining but the Thunder used a 14-9 run to take a 74-67 lead. Wheaton outscored Calvin 12-4 over the final 3:39 to seal the win.
Calvin was led by Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) with 24 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Thad Shymanski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) tossed in 15 points. Senior Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) had 13 points and six rebounds.
Wheaton's Aston Francis led all scorers with 30 points.
Calvin held a 38-37 rebounding advantage. Wheaton's bench outscored Calvin's reserves 32-8.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it hosts Cornerstone University at 8 p.m. as part of the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic.
