Men’s Basketball Edged at Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill. – The Calvin men's basketball team was edged on the road on Saturday night at Wheaton. The Thunder defeated the Knights, 74-65. Calvin is now 3-5 on the year and Wheaton improves to 5-3.

"I thought it was a really intense game tonight," said head coach Kevin Vande Streek. "It was a big improvement from last weekend. We competed really hard, we need to make some more shots and execute better. I think there are a lot of positives and we are going to keep getting better."

The Knights jumped out to an early 13-5 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Senior Cam Denney (Bluffton, Ind./Norwell) had five points in the Calvin run. The Thunder would rally to tie the game at 20 with 10:31 left in the first half. Freshman Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian) would give the Knights the lead back 15 seconds later with a jump shot. The two teams would exchange the lead a few times before Wheaton would push the lead to five at 32-27 with 3:31 left in the first half. Calvin would cut the lead to one and head into halftime trailing, 37-36.

Calvin started the second half on an 8-2 run to take a 44-39 lead. Wheaton would respond with a 6-0 run over the next three minute to regain the lead. The Knights and Thunder would exchange the lead six times before the Thunder held onto the lead for good. Wheaton would take a 10-point lead at the 4:05 mark of the second half. The Knights would chip the lead down to three before Wheaton would separate and take the game, 74-65.

Cam Denney led the Knights with a season-high 19 points. He also finished with seven rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian) tallied 15 points against the Thunder on Saturday. Senior Michael Welch (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) led Calvin with eight rebounds and junior Tony Canonie (South Haven, Mich./South Haven) had a game-high five assists. Calvin won the rebounding battle on Saturday, 37-34.

The Knights are back in action on Dec. 21, when the Knights host Anderson at Van Noord Arena.
