CALEDONIA, Mich. - Calvin picked up an impressive 10-8 non-conference victory at Division II Davenport on Thursday afternoon.
Calvin (12-19) outhit the host Panthers by a 12-11 count in the game and scored three runs in the top of the eighth to retake the lead.
Calvin battled throughout the game, overcoming a 3-1 deficit with two runs in the third. Calvin took a 4-3 lead on an RBI single by freshman Andrew Hung (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott HS) in the fifth and then built a 7-4 lead with three runs in the sixth. Davenport (23-15) scored two in the sixth and two in the seventh to take an 8-7 lead.
In the eighth, freshman Matt Raymond (Chicago, Il./Loyola HS) tripled and was brought home on an RBI single by freshman Ryan Petersen (Glen Ellyn, Il./Glenbard West HS). Sophomore Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) then delivered a two-out RBI triple and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Knights a 10-8 lead.
Senior Steven Dogger (Holland, Mich./Holland Calvary HS) pitched a scoreless eighth and junior Justin Paauwe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) followed with a scoreless ninth to pick up his third save of the season.
Freshman Zach Thor (Woodbury, Mn./New Life Academy HS) was one of seven Calvin pitchers to appear in Thursday's win and picked up the win to run his season record to 2-3.
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Olivet on Friday in a conference doubleheader scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
