GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin baseball team picked up a key MIAA victory on Saturday over the Albion Britons. The Knights won three of the four games in the series against the Britons. The Knights started the day winning the seven-inning game, 12-10. The Britons avoided the sweep, taking the nine-inning game, 10-4. The Knights are now 12-15 on the year and 7-9 in MIAA play.
Albion started the game with a homerun that flew just fair of the leftfield post.
The Knights scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take back the lead. Sophomore Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) singled to centerfield to score senior Colton Wolfe (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids) from second base. Junior Kyle Houts (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) blasted his second homerun of the season over the leftfield fence to score Wolfe.
The Britons would tie the game at three in the top of the third inning.
The Knights broke the game open with seven runs in the third inning. Junior Ryan Stewart (Shelby, Mich./Parkway Christian) singled to leftfield to score Kyle Houts. Freshman Logan Marshall (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) then doubled to centerfield, scoring Ryan Stewart. Senior Patrick Avila (Lakewood, Mich./Valley Christian) singled in Marshall. With the bases loaded, Colton Wolfe cleared the bases with a grand slam that soared over the leftfield fence.
Albion would not go away and would cut the Calvin lead to 10-9 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Britons would make it an 11-10 game in the top of the sixth inning.
Freshman Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) shutdown the Britons in the seventh inning to secure his fifth save of the season, finishing with three strikeouts. Freshman David Dahms (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) improved to 4-0 on the year with the victory. Jonathan Keane recorded six strikeouts in the start.
Albion jumped out to a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the third inning.
Trailing 6-1 in the seventh inning, Ryan Stewart tripled to center field to score sophomore Miles Kuperus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and junior Johnny Salgado (Whittier, Calif./Whittier).
Jonathan Keane singled to centerfield in the eighth inning to score Wolfe.
Sophomore Logan Walker (Imlay City, Mich./Lapeer East) recorded his first loss of the season on the mound.
The Knights return to action on Friday at Alma.
