Calvin Baseball Tops Saint Mary's and Wheaton In Non-Conference Saturday Slate

WHEATON, IL - The Calvin baseball team picked up a pair of non-conference victories on Saturday, defeating St. Marys (Mn.) 6-5 and Wheaton 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Wheaton's Lee Pfund Field.

In its victory over St. Mary's (8-5), Calvin scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and pushed acrosss the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth on a run scoring single by junior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS).

Sophomore Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) picked up the save with a scoreless ninth while freshman Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) collected his first collegiate save.

Junior Jamie Bristol (Grand Rapids, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) went the first 6.1 innings on the hill, scattering six hits while striking out two.

Calvin collected 13 hits including three off the bat of DeZwaan and three off the bat of Keane.
In the win over Wheaton (8-4), Calvin took a 2-1 lead on an RBI double by junior catcher Kyle Houts (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) in the seventh.

In the eighth, junior Johnny Salgago (Whittier, Ca./Whitter HS) reached second on a deep drive to center that plated sophomore Beau Redfield (Cedar Springs, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS). Salgado then scored on a double to left by freshman Jeremy Clark (San Diego, Ca./Mt. Carmel HS).

Keane came on in relief to pick up his second save of the afternoon. Freshman Mike Kool(Sturgis, Mich./Centreville HS) got the start and picked up his first collegiate victory, striking out two in four innings of work.

DeZwaan and Houts had two hits apiece for the Knights.

Calvin is back in action Monday night when it travels to Maryville College (Tn.) for a 7 p.m. game.
