Calvin Lands 14 Teams on MIAA Team GPA Award List

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Commissioner Penny Allen-Cook has recognized teams on the 2017-18 MIAA Team GPA Award list. This award recognizes conference athletic teams for performance in the classroom of a 3.3 cumulative GPA or better (on a 4.0 scale). During the recently completed 2017-18 school year, 14 of Calvin's athletic teams achieved this distinction, matching the most in school history – originally set in 2015-16.

Nine of Calvin's women's teams received the MIAA Team GPA Award while five of the men's teams also achieved the feat. Calvin teams receiving the honor are as follows; women's cross country, women's swimming and diving, men's cross country, women's volleyball, women's tennis, men's soccer, women's outdoor track and field, women's indoor track and field, women's basketball, men's outdoor track and field, men's indoor track and field, women's soccer, men's swimming and diving and women's golf.

Led by Brian Diemer, the women's cross country team continued a remarkable streak, earning a cumulative grade point average of 3.709. The Calvin women's cross country team is one of only two teams joining the Hope women's cross country team as the only teams to receive the award all 20 years it has been presented. 

Led by Dan Gelderloos, the women's swimming and diving team was next on the list with a team GPA of 3.552. The men's swimming & diving team recorded a team GPA of 3.337. 

The men's cross country team was also under the leadership of Brian Diemer and earned the award for the 12th time with a team GPA of 3.545. 

 Dr. Amber Warners saw her women's volleyball team honored for the 16th time with a grade point average of 3.514. 

Kevin Van Haitsma had his team once again on the list, posting a 3.485 grade point average while Ryan Souders was close behind with his men's soccer team posting a 3.480 grade point average.

Chuck Winkelman saw his women's basketball team receive the award, recording a 3.461 GPA. 

Bret Otte had all four teams make the list, his women's outdoor track and field team received the award for the 13th-straight year, with a GPA of 3.474. The men's outdoor track & field team tallied a GPA of 3.40. Otte's women's indoor track and field team posted an average of 3.472 and the men's indoor team finished with a 3.412 GPA. 

The Calvin women's soccer team is receiving the honor for the fourth straight year, recording a team GPA of 3.374.

Dr. Jerry Bergsma saw his women's golf team earn the honor with a 3.306 team GPA 

The MIAA has presented the Team GPA Award each year since the 1998-99 academic year.
